Dear All

Please let me congratulate you all on another successful season. I think it is very important that you all look back and enjoy the events of last season, as a lot of hard work and commitment went into making it all happen.

At the beginning of last season I was, like Neil, the committee and I guess a few other senior players in the club, both expectant and apprehensive of the season ahead. I was expectant of the first XI success in this season once more aiming to win a title and continue on from last year’s achievements. The apprehension came because of the fact we were trying to put out two league sides in a weekend and all I hoped for was to be able to fulfill those fixtures throughout the season.  As you know, I took over the Captaincy on a Saturday with the season almost upon us, and after a very successful season in 2007, being promoted into Division 5, the expectation was that we should consolidate our position and ensure our status in Division 5 by avoiding relegation.  All expectations were exceeded, with an excellent season resulting in 2nd place in the League and promotion to Division 4 North for 2009. Back to back promotions was a phenomenal achievement.

Many thanks have to go to Neil Sutton, Malc Jones and dare I say it - Polar who all had a bit of a thankless task at times in trying to find sides to compete in all our matches especially Saturday 2’s and Sundays. They stuck at it and ensured that the sides turned out were competitive.

I know the opinion amongst some club members was that the 1st XI was strong enough, but I would like to add that more people need to stand up and be counted if the club is to continue all round success on an ongoing basis. A lot of work needs to go into the 2nd XI and potential Junior section over the next few years to encourage competition for places.

There were many good matches in 2008, but 3 of them stood out for me in particular.

Hewell vs Cleobury at home 07/06/08 – a thumping 6 wicket win, chasing down 306, Ski and Mullers demolishing the league champions from 2007.

Hewell vs West Malvern away 12/07/08 – 148run chase in just 24 overs – Mullers, Ski, Chaz and Shak bringing home the bacon in a quality run chase.

Hewell Brintons at home 02/08/08 – a 10 wicket win against the League Champions, Ski and Immy absolutely destroying the eventual champions very comfortably.

I would like to thank all the players that played for the 1st team in 2008, every one of them contributed to a very successful season, and to be quite frank, with such good players, it was easy to Captain as they all delivered week in, week out.

I would like to congratulate 2 of our most Senior players, Mark “Mackie” Allcock for surpassing 400 wickets for Hewell CC in 2008, and Ian “Ski” Williams for surpassing 4000 runs for Hewell CC, I’m sure you will join me in congratulating both players on their tremendous achievements for the club.  I would also like to thank Lisa, my wife, for doing the teas all season for me, and for having the patience and understanding to allow me to play as many games as possible without grumbling too much!!

Heres to a successful 2009!!

Dear All,

I would like to thank all the players and officials of Hewell 2nd XI for their great contribution to our success this year.

At the start of the season our aim was to play good cricket in an enjoyable atmosphere. As the season progressed, strong contributions from [in no particular order] James Baylis, Malcolm Jones, Zulf, Keith Pannell, Majid Ali, Riz Khan, Craig Harvey, Mark Wood, Kevin Jones and myself, meant that we were in with a shout to win Division 8.

Excellent support from the rest of the team, including Terry Demaine, Mo Ikram and Rob Perry put us in a very strong position.

We ended the League season with a good record,  and everyone played their part in that success.

We therefore finished a very enjoyable season 2nd in the League in the first year of fielding a Hewell 2nd XI in living memory.

Once again thanks to everyone who contributed to such a successful season.

PS The challenge now is to do the same in the Second Elevens in Division 4 next season

Dear All.

At the beginning of the season we had a new captain in place, and a hope that the Sunday team would be able to get 11 players out each week that would be able to compete.

Not long into the season, the captain resigned, and Polar took on the role of organising Sunday fixtures and selecting a team.

Polar deserves a lot of credit for the work he put in, arranging the matches and ringing round every player every week, harassing everyone until they agreed to play.  If I remember rightly it worked virtually every week with the exception of 1 match where we played with 9 men (and still won!!)

There were some excellent performances throughout the season, the one that really sticks out for me though was Terry Demaines bowling performance where he took 5-37 with an inspired spell of bowling, but I would like to thank every single player that made themselves available on a Sunday which enabled the matches to go ahead, and allow us to be competitive on a Sunday as well as on a Saturday.

I would like to thank all the players that played for the 1st team in 2008, every one of them contributed to a very successful season. It is important to stress that we need more players to make themselves available for more Sundays next year to ensure that we can progress as a club.

Heres to a successful 2009!!
